Singapore's Birthday
Well, 8th August 2009. My first celebrated national day as a Singaporean. So, Yeah, watched NDP on TV. So, I think this year's parade is awesome. I saw my Ex-Unit on TV, hehe, 36th Singapore Combat Engineers Explosive Ordance Disposal. They appeared to diffuse the bomb on like Chapter 2 if my memory did not fail me. I used to be like that, wearing those heavy green bomb suits running about. That was what i did for 2 years, well, it was meaningfull. Those numerous amount of standby duties were really memorable. I remembered I had to stay in camp for like 1 month without going home. NDP duties, bringing my dog into the bomb area, security sweep; these watched me grew; from a childish and naive fellow to what you all se now. Yeah, and Crystal, i still remember her. Although i suppose she already had forgotten about me, she will always remain in a special place in my heart Some comments about this year's NDP, I myself feel that it is quite emotional. I initially thought this was the trend or what-so-ever. But after several thoughts, i thought otherwise. This year's NDP song is so low and emotional, the parade was like also dull and not vibrant. I asked my mum why and the reply i got was: yeah lah, got a bit not very happy the mood. Well at first i didnt have much thoughts on this, until Lee Hsien Loong was on the screen, he told people to stand up and fight and such. This reminded me of the recession earlier this year Seriously, this is like a nation celebration for everyone. However, if this year was like our previous, with the evergrowing GDP and high employment rate, the emotional theme this year will be weird. Think about this, lets say you lose your job, have a family to feed, you don't know what lies in front of you, everything seems to be in chaos and you are lost for actions, and furthurmore, there is the nation's birthday, everyone celebrating. How would this person feel? And if you don't know, such people are not uncommon, i knew quite a few people who lost their ricebowl earlier this year. And you think a happy, vibrant, celebrative NDP is cool for such people? Spare a thought for these poor souls please This explains it, the nature of the NDP was like encouraging and such. Notice the song, the whole parade, notice that other than the usual military parade, the rest of the celebration was more towards encouraging people Well, I do not know if this thing is really true or I am just thinking too much. This is just my 2 cents thought. Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINGAPORE! |
